Gandharva Loka: World Music Store

THE source for World Music Instruments since 1989

Handmade Musical Instruments

About Us

At the end of the eighties the idea was born to open up a music shop of a special kind. At that time nobody knew in which direction it would develop. We simply wanted to inspire people to be open to something new: to new musical instruments, new cultures and finally to learn a bit more about themselves. Thus our name Gandharva Loka originates from the Bengali language and means:

- The Abode of the Celestial Musicians -

Our first and foremost aim is to be a source of inspiration to you to discover and support your own creativity, for we believe that inside every human being there is a celestial musician.

“Next to silence music is the appropriate
expression of the inexpressible...”

As we all might know, the whole world and everything that exists is made from vibrations, and only the different frequencies dictate the forms in which things are manifested.
For us there is no need for scientific research in order to prove the harmonising and especially the healing quality of music. If you take your time to make music for a while—if you relax lying in a sound-cradle or if you listen to a singing bowl—then you will feel it so convincingly!

As in our own lives, we try to find a balance in our work as well. That is why we consciously avoid aiming at short lived strategies of profit making. Instead of this we aspire for a holistic way towards a better quality of life and lasting economical developement. Our contacts with local instrument makers that have grown over long years are the basis for an integral process of supporting the family handcraft worldwide (Fair Trade).

Our online catalogue of course is meant for all those who love music and who love life, but especially for those who in a professional way want to serve others with music. If you are a musician, a therapist or a teacher, we want to walk side by side with you and supply you with our rich treasure of experience: in order to choose the suitable instrument for you, or by offering a workshop according to your interest, or to help you with a big project such as installing a sound-garden or sound-path.

We do hope to be able to inspire you, and wish you joy while browsing our website.

Music is a medium of communication that influences all levels of human existence. It is an integral part of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian holistic science which promotes a happy and healthy lifestyle. For over 35 years, Dr. Shri Balaji També has conducted research on the therapeutic effects of different ragas combined with specific rhythms and mantras (phonetic expressions). He has composed many melodies and instrumental music. An important component of all his musical compositions is the bij mantra ?Aum", which brings the individual into tune with the Self. This unique healing music has the capacity to balance the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and space), the three doshas (vata. pitta and kapha), and the energy centers in the body.
